A local group gathered at Amigos Cantina on Dec. 7 to discuss climate justice and the impact of climate change on local communities.
The meeting ran concurrently with the Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP16) in Cancun. The local groups involved in the Saskatoon meeting included Canadian Youth Delegation, National Farmers Union, Canadian Climate Justice Network and Next Up Saskatoon.
Those in attendance had an opportunity to discuss fundamental questions about climate justice and how it impacts their surroundings both locally and globally. Regina activist Sue Deranger spoke of her experiences last year at the COP15 in Copenhagen.
Kevin Millsip, the director of Check Your Head, a youth education organization, and co-director of Next Up, a leadership program, led the second portion of the evening, discussing local initiatives and their work towards climate justice in Saskatchewan.
