On Nov. 14, the Dallas Cowboys dispatched the New York Giants 33-20, which was quarterback Jon Kitna’s first win in a few years. However, doubt in the team still lingers.
New coach Jason Garrett sprung a surprising win for the victory-starved Cowboys. Often called “America’s Team,” before the season the Cowboys were lauded, and many hoped to see them playing at home in the Super Bowl this coming February. The Giants boast arguably the best defence in the NFL and that makes it an important victory for the down-trodden Cowboys.
Dallas finished the 2009-10 season with an 11-5 record and after losing to the Vikings in last years playoffs, they hoped that 2011 would carry them to Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Feb. 6.
The Cowboys will not make it there at their current pace — this year has been cruel and they only possess a 2-7 record. The cause is a hotly debated topic. Many people can be brought forward to criticize, to cast blame upon, to berate and to mock. The news often devotes a tremendous amount of time covering Big D.
People are infatuated with the team and America’s team hasn’t had a losing record since 2007.
The media has had a feeding frenzy with the Cowboys organization.
Deservedly, since the team has been terrible in the playoffs for years. Reporters and fans keep a close eye on players, often finding someone to blame. Specifically, injured quarterback Tony Romo has been a target of editorial predation, and ex-girlfriend Jessica Simpson helped give the media plenty of fodder.
I’m glad to see the Cowboys losing — they are an easy team to root against. They are one of the winningest teams in NFL history, and a bad season was bound to come.
The Cowboys have had a lot of success under current owner and general manager Jerry Jones, but their inability to draft has cost them. We’re long past the days of Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin. The most recent Big D hopefuls have fallen short. The blame lies in management and coaching.
The Cowboys need a good coach and discipline. The team is demoralized and the win against the Giants has the potential to turn things around — given new coaching. Jones hired coach Jason Garrett and he has brought them their second victory in 10 weeks of football.
It’s time to step into some big shoes.
Kitna is an intriguing option for the Cowboys. The 38-year old quarterback earned his first win in over a year. Kitna had an incredible 124.1 quarterback rating for the game. The team tore into the Giant’s typically steadfast system, breaking them down to score 33 points. They were accurate and devastating.
Their ability to seize an important game has been proven in the regular season, but not the post-season. The team has potential, evident against the Giants, but Dallas fans may not see any hardware for a long time.
The media backlash will be hilarious.
