Huskies cross-country runner Caitlin Warkentin clinched the school’s second-consecutive Canada West women’s title in Sherbrooke, Que. on Nov. 13.
The fourth-year nursing student finished the five-kilometre Canada West/Canadian Interuniversity Sport championship race in a time of 18:29 to claim top spot in the Canada West and fourth nationwide.
Last season Jodi Souter won gold in the Canada West for the Huskies. Two other Huskies have earned the Canada West women’s cross country crown: Tracy Kelly in 1981 and Edyta Sieminska in 2002.
Samir Marin was the top men’s finisher for the Huskies, placing 20th in the Canada West and 60th across Canada with a time of 34:56.
The women’s volleyball team beat the University of Calgary Dinos for the first time since 2002, surprising the Dinos 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-18) on Nov. 13 for their first win of the season. However, the Huskies dropped the previous night’s contest 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 25-14, 25-19) to their visitors from Calgary. The Huskies are now 1-3 on the season while the Dinos sit at 2-2.
In men’s volleyball, the reigning CIS champion Dinos swept the Huskies, beating them 3-1 (25-21, 25-15, 23-25, 25-18) on Nov. 12 and 3-0 (25-18, 25-12, 25-21) on Nov. 13. The weekend’s matches put the Dinos at 4-0 overall and the Huskies at 0-4. This weekend, both Huskies squads travel to Manitoba to face the University of Winnipeg Wesmen.
The men’s hockey team earned their first weekend sweep of the season, notching two wins at home against the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds.
On Nov. 12 the Huskies won 4-1, while the Nov. 13 game saw the Huskies top their vistors 3-1.
The Huskies are now 6-4, fourth in the Canada West conference.
The women’s Huskies squad sits at 7-3, second in the conference after a weekend split on the road against the Thunderbirds.
On Nov. 12 the Huskies won 5-2, but unexpectedly fell 3-1 the next night.
This weekend both Huskies teams take on the Alberta Golden Bears. The men travel to Edmonton, while the women stay home at Rutherford Arena.
Winning was in fashion for both the men’s and women’s basketball outfits in Lethbridge on Nov. 12 and 13.
The men topped their host Pronghorns 93-61 and 107-90 on consecutive nights. Meanwhile, the women weren’t congenial guests, coming up victorious 58-51 and 62-46.
The women are now 6-2, fourth in the Canada West, while the men are 5-3, six in the conference.
This weekend the Huskies basketball teams play host to the Winnipeg Wesmen.
