The women’s hockey team secured two wins against the visiting Calgary Dinos over the weekend, to dethrone the Dinos and take top spot in Canada West standings. The girls bested their rivals in both weekend match-ups and sit at a 6-2 record with two games in-hand against the second place Dinos.
Reigning Canada West MVP Breanne George potted three goals on Nov. 5 at Rutherford Rink. The fourth-year forward scored two in the second period and another in the third to dispatch the Dinos. The rivalry continued on Nov. 7, with the Dinos out to an early lead — making it 3-1 early in the second period. Saskatchewan battled back with two goals by Cara Wooster and George finished the Dinos with a third period powerplay goal.
George and Wooster have been lighting the lamp regularly, with a combined 29 points in eight games, trailing only Dinos’ Hayley Wickenheiser in Canada West scoring. The Huskies are unbeaten when playing the Dinos since Calgary rejoined the league last season.
The Huskies men’s hockey team had mixed success over the weekend, but tied the home-and-home series against the Calgary Dinos on the road. However, the Huskies fell to the Dinos 4-1 on Nov. 5. Dinos captain Reid Jorgensen tallied a hat-trick and finished the weekend with the most goals in Canada West hockey (10 in 10 games).
The Huskies fossilized the Dinos 2-1 in the second game of the weekend on Nov. 6. Goals from Steven DaSilva and Brennan Bosch gave the Huskies a much needed win and brought them even with the Dinos in the two weekend games. The victory was noteworthy, as Huskies coach Dave Adolph earned his 300th career win. The man behind the bench moved into second place all-time, behind legend and former coach Clare Drake.
The Huskies are slated to play the UBC Thunderbirds next weekend. UBC has been struggling in both men’s and women’s hockey, with neither team above .500. The Huskies men’s team sits at 4-4 and the women’s 6-2 record places them at the top of Canada West with a current four-game win-streak.
Huskies men’s and women’s basketball battled it out with the visiting University of Fraser Valley Cascades squads on the weekend of Nov. 6 and 7.
The women’s team finished with two wins: 89-72 on Nov. 6 and 80-73 on Nov. 7. On Nov. 6, Regina native and all-Canadian Kim Tulloch entered the 1,000 point club with 22 points versus the Cascades on home court. The Huskies had the lead for most of the game, though the score did come close as UFV fought back in the third and fourth quarters. In the Nov. 7 evening match, the Dogs held onto a 20-point third quarter lead to earn the win. Saskatchewan is now 4-2 on the season.
The men’s basketball team had a split against visiting Cascades, winning the first game 100-89. Five players scored in the double digits and Huskies dominated rebounds 44-23. The second game on Nov. 7 was less favourable for the Huskies, as UFV outscored the Dogs by 12 in the fourth quarter to steal the game. Jamelle Barrett tied a Huskies record with nine three-pointers, eight of which came in the first half.
The men’s and women’s basketball crews hit the road to take on the University of Lethbridge Nov. 12 and 13.
The men’s volleyball team started the season with two losses after a troublesome weekend. Visiting Brandon University Bobcats served up too much for the Huskies to handle — reigning CIS player of the year Paul Sanderson helped the Bobcats to a 3-0 victory over the Dogs with 20 kills on Nov. 6 at the Physical Activity Complex. A night prior, the Bobcats beat the Huskies 3-1 after the visiting coach received a red card for undisciplined behaviour and had to leave the sidelines.
The women fared no better against visiting Bobcats. The Green and White lost 3-0 in their first game on Nov. 4, seeking redemption on Nov. 5, the Huskies got battered. The Bobcats attack had five players with 10 kills each. Huskies outside hitter Candace Hueser led the Huskies with 10 of her own.
The Huskies will look to get the ball rolling when they play host to the reigning CIS champion University of Calgary Dinos Nov. 12 and 13.
