The Student Health Centre on Campus will no longer provide students with medical notes in the case of missed term work or exams.
The decision states that “requiring physician-signed excuse notes doesn’t make medical sense.” Illnesses are rarely identifiable after one visit, or, as is often the case with excuse notes, once the student feels better. Other cases, like bad hangovers, don’t warrant a doctor’s visit, since they are best treated with over-the-counter drugs, Doritos and Gatorade.
The other reason is that doctor’s notes are inconsistent with “student expectations and learning goals.” The university expects students to act like adults “rather than imply they are not to be trusted by asking a doctor to verify their illness.”
All that, and verifying illnesses wastes a huge chunk of physicians’ time.
