The USSU Food Centre is organizing its annual Halloween Trick or Eat food drive — a charitable event in which university students go door-to-door on Oct. 31 asking for non-perishable food items to donate to the Saskatoon Food Bank.
The event is not exclusive to Saskatooon and is supported by students and communities all across North America.
It has grown immmensely over the last couple years and this year’s event is expected to be the largest yet — there are 100 communities registered so far as opposed to last year’s 60.
Kalen Ross of the USSU Food Centre noted that last year’s event was extremely successful but hopes this year is even better.
He noted that prizes are offered for the team or person who collects the most food and that he has introduced a competition between all participating U of S colleges — the college who collects the most food per volunteer will win the coveted Candy Cup trophy.
“It’s a huge trophy filled with candy and the college society that wins will have their name engraved on it,” said Ross.
In order to be eligible for prizes, however, students are encouraged to sign up — whether as a team or as an individual — and designate what area of the city they would like to cover.
Participants, hopefully dressed according to tradition, should meet at Upper Place Riel on Halloween at 6 p.m. From there, people will be given map locations and sent on their way. Meeting back at Place Riel anytime before 10:30 p.m., the food will be loaded and taken to the Food Bank.
Most consider it embarrassing to go trick-or-treating at our age, but why not satisfy this inner desire by helping others on the day that people are most comfortable opening their doors to strangers?
“It’s kind of an excuse to go trick-or-treating when you’re an adult,” said Ross. “We don’t take candy as a food donation, so all the candy you get, you keep.”
Anyone can participate, so sign up, make a costume and meet at Place Riel on Halloween to support a good cause.
