Floating at a 3-3 record early in the Canada West season is the Huskies men’s hockey team.
Following a disappointing 2-0 shutout at the hands of the Manitoba Bisons, primarily due to an efficient Bisons’ powerplay on Oct. 23, the Huskies managed to retain some optimism over the past weekend when Steven DaSilva netted a clutch overtime goal to trump the visiting Bisons 4-3 on Oct. 24.
The third ranked women’s Manitoba Bisons were not so lucky and suffered a sweeping courtesy of the women’s Huskies. The Dogs cleaned up on the Bisons 5-2 and 4-1 during the past weekend’s matches at Rutherford Rink. The Huskies were aided in their weekend’s offensive endeavours largely due to the four points Breanne George collected over the course of both games. The Huskies women’s squad now improves to an impressive 4-2 on the season.
Both Huskies men’s and women’s hockey teams resume play on Nov. 5 and 6 against the Calgary Dinos; the men’s Huskies will visit Dinos territory over the upcoming weekend while the women’s Huskies will hold down home turf at Rutherford Rink against Calgary.
The Huskies men’s basketball team entered the 2010-11 Canada West season on a bittersweet note. In rematches of last year’s national championship, the Huskies headed west to the University of British Columbia to tackle the Thunderbirds on Oct. 22 and 23 in Vancouver.
Coming into the season as the reigning national champs wasn’t an image the Huskies upheld in their first game of the season as they were easily demolished by the Tbirds 91-60. It was back to the drawing board the following evening and the Green and White managed to pull off a nailbiting 97-96 win, staving off a last minute comeback by UBC. New Californian recruit Jamelle Barrett scored eight points in the remaining 1:11 to keep the Huskies on top and exit the weekend with a respectable 1-1 record to kickstart the 2011 CIS season.
The Huskies women’s basketball crew — the 2009-10 CIS bronze medalists — upped the men’s squad and pulled off 73-65 and 66-40 victories over the Tbirds on Oct. 22 and 23 on the road for a sweep.
Both the men’s and women’s Huskies basketball teams prepare for their home-openers and get back to action against the University of Victoria Vikes on Oct. 29 and 30 at the Physical Activity Complex.
Prior to tip-off on Oct. 29 games, the Huskies men’s championship banner will be unveiled and both men’s and women’s squads will be honoured for their valiant efforts of yesteryear.
After missing the playoffs in 2009, it looks as if the Huskies men’s soccer squad are post-season bound after narrowly slipping by the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns 2-1 on Oct. 24, improving their record to 6-4.
The win came a day after tragically falling 3-1 to the Calgary Dinos, the Huskies’ competition for nailing down that final playoff spot. Jerson Barandica-Hamilton and Nick Clarke were responsible for the Huskies’ two goals over the Pronghorns.
Similar to how their men’s counterpart entered the past weekend, the women’s Huskies soccer team fell to the Calgary Dinos 3-1 and found victory over the Lethbridge Pronghorns by a margin of 2-1 to improve to 6-5.
The Huskies men’s and women’s soccer squads will keep their playoff hopes alive and return to action on Oct. 29 against the UBC Tbirds and on Oct. 30 against the Trinity West Spartans at Griffiths Stadium.
