University Students’ Council discussed the possibility of a white-water park in Saskatoon and tackled two issues from last year.
Representatives from Saskatoon Whitewater Park asked the USSU for support in their proposal to build a publicly owned white-water park on the weir of the river in Saskatoon. They outlined the probable costs and benefits, and then opened the floor to questions about the park.
The request for USSU support was not for funding but for vocal backing. The representatives requested that students vocally promote the park, talk to city councillors and attend the open houses regarding the park.
The USSU has yet to make a decision with regards to supporting the project.
USSU general manager Caroline Cottrell gave a presentation on two proposals made last year.
Last year the USSU passed a motion to look into buying a house near campus that would host campus groups and clubs. Cottrell explained that the costs of buying and mortgaging are not currently financially viable for the USSU — especially considering the mortgage for Place Riel. While this issue will be voted upon on another date, the unofficial consensus was that buying a house was not part of the USSU’s duties.
Also last year, the USSU proposed to look into starting a microbrewery on campus. Cottrell ran through the issues of licensing, associated costs, swaying the university administration’s position and municipal regulations. She concluded that this would be a very difficult and expensive project for the USSU to undertake and she did not recommend they do so.
They will vote on the future of a university microbrewery at a later date.
