Hockey: The Huskies men’s hockey team has finally achieved a winning record on the season and moves to 6-5-1 after sweeping the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds on Nov. 13 and 14 at Rutherford Rink. The Dogs move into fourth place in the Canada West with the pair of wins and go on the road to Manitoba to tackle the Bisons on Nov. 20 and 21 next weekend.
Unfortunately, the women’s hockey squad had opposite results on the weekend and suffered their first two losses of the season. The No. 8 ranked Huskies fell to the UBC Thunderbirds in Vancouver by tight scores of 3-2 and 4-3 on Nov. 13 and 14. Both games were extremely close and after three periods of hockey on Nov. 13 the teams found themselves even at 2-2, which lead to a shootout. It took five rounds of shootout action to declare the T-Birds the winners after defenceman Kirsten Mihalcheon snuck the puck past Huskies goaltender Vanessa Frederick. The Huskies still sit in second place in the Canada West with a 6-2-2 record after the losses and will be getting back to work next weekend when they travel to Manitoba to take on the Bisons.
Basketball: The west coast was not any kinder to the No. 7 ranked Huskies men’s and No. 2 ranked Huskies women’s basketball teams over the weekend.

On the road, the men’s Prairie Dogs suffered a 90-83 loss to the UBC Thunderbirds on Nov. 13 and were downed by a score of 82-54 against the University of Victoria Vikes on Nov. 14. The loss drops the Huskies to a 2-2 record and leaves the squad in third place of the Prairie Division in the Canada West.
In a similar showing, the Huskies women’s crew were narrowly trumped on Nov. 13 against UBC in a 68-65 overtime win in favour of the Thunderbirds and were dealt a 58-52 loss the following evening in Victoria by the Vikes. The Huskies women’s record also now rests at 2-2 as they fall to fifth place in Canada West’s Prairie Division.
The Huskies men’s and women’s basketball teams return home to action against the Calgary Dinos on Nov. 20 and 21 at the Physical Activity Complex.
There’s even some academic incentive in showing up to cheer on the Green and White this upcoming weekend; at the games on Nov. 20 and 21, students who swipe their student card at the PAC will be entered for a chance to win tuition for a three credit class ($700 maximum) courtesy of an anonymous Huskies basketball donor. An announcement in the third quarter of each game will reveal the winner. Who knew Huskies athletics could be so scholarly?
Cross Country: Huskies long distance runner Jodi Souter was crowned Canada West champion at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport and Canada West cross country championship in Kingston, Ont., on Nov. 21. Souter managed to clinch first place and finished the day with a race time of 17:30.3. With the impressive results in Kingston over the weekend, Souter becomes the 2009 Canada West women’s cross country MVP and a Canada West First Team All-Star.
Aside from Souter’s dominating performance, the Huskies cross country squad finished fifth in the Canada West and 12th in the CIS at the Kingston competition. The Victoria Vikes gained hold of the Canada West women’s team title, followed by the Alberta Golden Bears, Manitoba Bisons and Calgary Dinos.
