A lone goal scored late off a corner kick secured victory for the Huskies on Sept. 17 against the University of Manitoba Bisons in Winnipeg.

Leesa Eggum’s goal for the Huskies in the 81st minute stood despite a frantic attempt by the Bisons to tie the game late. This was the Huskies’ first win of the season.

“Every time one of us had the ball, we always had a [Huskie] player pressuring us,” Bison midfielder Selina Speranza told Huskie Athletics. “So we would be double-teamed, but our team wouldn’t open up for each other. So it would feel like one-on-two or three. That was an issue.”

The Huskies got their second win of the season against the Bisons on Sept. 18.

The Bisons enjoyed a brief lead in the first half with an early goal by Jamila Calvez, but it didn’t last long. The Huskies got a freebie after the Bisons scored on their own net at the 30-minute mark. Huskies defender Meagan Manson scored her first goal of the game in extra time of the first half and netted her second of the game 15 minutes into the second half. Erica Hindmarsh scored shortly after to bring the Huskies to a 4-2 win.

The Huskies will travel to MacEwan University to play the Griffins on Sept. 24 and Mount Royal University on Sept. 25 to play against the Cougars.

Huskies 19, Dinos 20

In a defensive struggle that came down to the final minute, the number two ranked University of Calgary Dinos clinched a 20-19 win over the number 10 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies at Griffiths Stadium on Sept. 16.

The win makes it nine in a row for Calgary over the Huskies. The Dinos remain perfect on the season at 3-0, while the Huskies drop to 2-1.

The number 10 ranked Huskies fell to the number two ranked Dinos 20-19 at their homecoming game on Sept. 16, with the Dinos’ win decided by a late upwind field goal.

The Huskies had taken the lead 19-16 with a little over seven minutes remaining on a Sean Stenger 20-yard field goal. Kyle Siemens connected with Julan Lynch on a long pass and ran to set the Huskies up in the red zone.

“We played our hearts out, we did, we were good all night. We had to make a couple more plays,” said head coach Brian Towriss. “What we proved tonight, we can play with them. We can play with anybody in this conference. We have five [games] left and they’re going to be five great games.”

“In a one-point game, there could have been 20 plays through the course of the game that could have made the difference,” Towriss added. “Give [the Dinos] credit, they drove the ball 95 yards into the wind to kick the game-winning field goal.”

Four different Dinos recorded sacks led by the game’s leading tackler, Micha Teitz.

The Huskies head to Manitoba next week to meet the Bisons.

Men’s Soccer:

Huskies 3, Timber Wolves 0

Huskies 0, Thunderbirds 0

The Huskies found their stride offensively in the second half, defeating the University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves 3-0 at the Prince George Youth Soccer Association Fields on Sept. 16.

Huskies’ Jacob Powell, Sam Whiting and Mohamed Omar all scored for the green and white, outshooting the Timberwolves 17-10 in total and 8-5 in shots on goal.

Huskies’ goalkeeper Greg Buckley made five saves, while Timberwolves’ goalkeeper Mitch MacFarlane stopped five shots.

The Huskies capitalized on a corner kick rebound in the 66th minute. The kick from midfielder Mitch Bauche rebounded out to Powell, whose shot from just outside the 18-yard box knuckled off MacFarlane’s hands and into the top right corner for the 1-0 advantage.

Whiting gave the Huskies a two-goal cushion in the 82nd minute, converting a header off a cross. Omar added another goal in similar fashion during added time to secure the 3-0 win.

On Sept. 18, the Huskies completed their B.C. road trip with a stop at the University of British Columbia to take on the Thunderbirds. The game resulted in a 0-0 draw, bringing the Huskies to a record of 1-3-2.
