The women’s basketball team will look to pick up some much needed points when they battle the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns Jan. 24 and 25 in the Physical Activity Complex.
The Huskies are currently in a three-way draw for first place in the Prairie Division, sharing the top spot with the University of Regina Cougars and the University of Alberta Pandas. Depending on how each team fares this weekend, one may be able to rise above the rest.
Sitting in sixth place in the division with a 5-9 record, it will be a big task for the Pronghorns to defeat the Huskies on home turf. The Dogs are 12-2 on the season and a perfect 6-0 at home. This will be the first and only meeting between the two teams during the regular season. When the teams met last year, each came away with one win.
The Huskies are coming off a loss to the University of Calgary Dinos but the defeat shouldn’t do much to the team’s confidence — they were previously on an eight-game winning streak. The Pronghorns dropped their last two games to the University of Alberta Pandas.
On paper the Huskies have the edge over the Pronghorns in almost every category. The Dogs score an average of 72 points compared to just 57 by the Pronghorns and are more accurate with a 44.5 field goal percentage while their opponents net 37. The Dogs are also more effective off the boards, pulling down 43 rebounds to the Pronghorns 36.
Key players for the Huskies will be the team’s top scorer and leading rebounder Dalyce Emmerson, Kiera Lyons and Kabree Howard. The Pronghorn’s main threat will be Kim Veldman, who leads the team in points scored and rebounds.
