The Huskies men’s basketball team remains undefeated after sweeping the University of Regina Cougars on Nov. 15 and 16 in Regina.
The Dogs are now 6-0 on the season and maintain their seat on the throne of the Prairie Division with the University of Winnipeg Wesmen, the only other undefeated team in the league.
The Dogs secured their fifth win of the season with a 90-78 victory over the home team on Friday night.
After the end of the first quarter the Huskies held a healthy 32-19 lead over the Cougars and the half ended with the Dogs ahead 47- 33. The visiting team just edged the Cougars in shooting percentage, netting 40 per cent from the field and 42 per cent of three-pointers while the home team made 36 and 33 per cent respectively.
The second half was a close affair as the two teams matched each other basket for basket. The Huskies barely outscored the Cougars 24-23 in the third quarter while the home team outscored the Dogs by a slim three-point margin in the fourth quarter. The Cougars shot 48 per cent in the second half while the Huskies fell to 31 per cent.
Huskie Stephon Lamar was the top scorer of the night recording 25 points. Dadrian Collins added 20 points and grabbed eight off the boards. Ben Baker recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
The second battle between the two teams was much of the same as the Huskies once again used a strong opening half to propel them to an 85-69 win.
The Dogs asserted their dominance early, scoring 18 of 23 points in the closing minutes of the opening quarter. After the first ten minutes of play the green and white held a 24-13 lead. Heading into halftime the Huskies were far ahead of the Cougars with the score at 45-24.
The teams were neck and neck in the second half but the Cougars could not make up for the points they surrendered in the opener. The home team outscored the Huskies 45-40 for the half and improved their shooting percentage, but it wasn’t enough as the Dogs recorded their sixth consecutive win.
The Huskies shot 40 per cent overall and landed 10 of 30 three-point attempts. The Cougars shot 31 per cent and landed 10 of 33 from beyond the arc.
Matt Forbes posted big number for the Huskies, recording a game-high 17 points and dominating off the boards with 10 rebounds. Collins added 14 points and Andrew Henry recorded 14 points and nine rebounds. Lamar had 13 points and eight assists.
The Huskies host the Trinity Western University Spartans and the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades on Nov. 22 and 23.
