Riding a four game winning streak, the undefeated Huskies women’s basketball team headed to Regina ready to battle the University of Regina Cougars. The team suffered their first loss at the hands of their provincial rival on Nov. 15 but came back to claim a win the next night.
The Dogs are now 5-1 on the season and hold the top spot in the Prairie Division standings. The second place Cougars, University of Alberta Pandas and University of Calgary Dinos are all hot on the heels of the Huskies.
The Huskies dropped their first contest of the year 52-73 to the Cougars after the home team mounted two big second half runs to net the win after the Dogs held an early lead.
The opening quarter ended with the Huskies holding a slight 18-12 advantage and looking as if they may be able to hold on to their undefeated record. The second quarter saw both teams scoring drop as the Cougars recorded 13 points while the Huskies scored a mere nine. Going into halftime the Huskies held on to a miniscule 27-25 lead.
Both teams would have liked to see higher shooting percentages in the opening half with the Huskies shooting 31 per cent from the field while the Cougars sat at 37 per cent. The Dogs struggled from beyond the arc, only going 1-6 in three-pointers.
The Cougars found their form after coming back from the break and went on an 11 point run in the third quarter to give the home team the lead. The momentum stayed with the Cougars as they opened the final quarter with 15 unanswered points to gain what proved to be an insurmountable lead.
The Dogs’ shooting woes continued in the second half as only 26 per cent of their attempts found the net and 0-8 three-pointers fell. The Cougars improved to 54 and 42 per cent respectively.
Dalyce Emmerson led the Huskies with 22 points and nine rebounds while Antoinette Miller added six points and six rebounds.
Saturday’s game was a low-scoring affair as the Huskies snuck out a 56-43 win to keep their season losses to one.
The two teams stayed close throughout the half with neither team gaining more than a six-point advantage.
The Cougars stole the last six points to take a small 27-22 lead into halftime. The home team saw their offence wane in the second half as they only scored 16 more points in the final 20 minutes of play. The Huskies fared far better, scoring 34 to earn the win.
Shooting problems persisted for both team, with the Huskies going 18-for-62 from the field while the Cougars were 16-for-66. The Dogs connected on 3 of 17 from beyond the arc while the Cougars landed only 3 of 25.
Emmerson had another big night, outscoring all players with 19 points and 17 rebounds. Jordyn Halvorson added another 17 points for the Huskies.
The Huskies host the Trinity Western University Spartans and the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades on Nov. 22 and 23.
