Jamelle Barrett might hear his name called in the National Basketball Association’s draft June 28.
The Rancho Cordova, Calif. native spent the last two seasons with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies. The Star Phoenix reported today that he is scheduled to work out for the Sacramento Kings sometime within the next week and a half.
“It was scheduled for Wednesday but… I think they’re now going to move it to Sunday because they just found out I was draft eligible,” Barrett told The Star Phoenix. “It’s very exciting considering I would have never thought I would have a chance, coming from the University of Saskatchewan, to do something like this.”
The 5-10, 175-pound guard is a two-time first team all-Canadian as well as a two-time Canada West conference MVP in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport league. He averaged 23 points per game and totalled 286 assists and 96 steals in his two seasons with Saskatchewan.
Prior to joining the Huskies, Barrett played for the Cosumnes River Hawks in the California Community College Athletic Association’s Big 8 conference where he was named the conference’s MVP. In high school he was an ESPN top 150 and was named an all-state and all-region player.
Barrett told The Star Phoenix that his goal is to land a spot in the NBA Development League with the Kings’ affiliate team, the Reno Bighorns, but added that if he fails to crack the roster he would consider playing in Europe.
Either way, he won’t be playing for the Huskies next season.
