United Way Saskatoon announced Thursday that it aims to raise $5.1 million this year for its projects.
Volunteers swarmed downtown Saskatoon early in the morning with signs pledging the amount, despite the somewhat inclement weather. Cars passing by encouraged the participants with honking and occasional cheers. Dotted amongst the crowds were girls in red United Way capes, all to get the word out.
“I understand that we had over 250 supporters out today,” said Josh Pion from the United Way board of directors, noting the turnout was high despite the weather.
The $5.1 million goal is the highest yet for the United Way, which aimed to raise $4.3 million last year. Proceeds go to various community groups to address poverty, literacy and other social issues.
