Saskatoon’s newest Sushi place will shock you.
Go for Sushi sits in an unassuming location on 8th Street at the Grosvenor Park Shopping Centre. Observing it from the parking lot, you might expect a small, narrow restaurant — nothing special. As soon as you enter Go for Sushi, all of your previously conceived notions disappear.
In addition to serving delicious sushi, it has an all-you-can-eat buffet — with ice cream! You can eat from the buffet and order as much sushi as you like — all for one somewhat-affordable price.
But, as is the case with most all-you-can-eat sushi bars, you must eat all the sushi you order or you are charged extra for wasting food. This is more difficult than it sounds. I think this is why they included the all-you-can-eat buffet with the option of endless sushi. You instantly go to the buffet to tide you over before sushi, thus filling you up and thwarting your ability to eat all the sushi you want and costing you more. They’re sneaky like that.
Go for Sushi opened less than a month ago and is still working out the many kinks that come with operating a restaurant; namely, properly assigning servers to specific tables. The two times that I participated in the all-you-can-eat gluttony fest I had upwards of five servers over the span of my experience. It makes it difficult to know who to tip and messes up the chain of command in terms of placing orders. Filling our water glasses regularly also became a task many of our servers did not feel comfortable undertaking.
Another patron expressed dismay at the flimsiness of the bathroom doors, saying he feared he would crush them with his super-human strength. He was also upset that they were out of bubblegum and cotton candy ice cream.
Aside from the lapse in service and flimsy bathroom doors, Go for Sushi delivered a delicious dining experience as far as sushi is concerned. Overall, the place is pretty goddamn classy. The food is fantastic, the price ($15 to $25 per person depending on when you go) could be improved and the service definitely needs revamping.
But, if you are a fan of sushi and buffets I strongly urge you to check it out.
